Your instructions are not self-consistent. First you su and cd to /etc/samba, then in the next block the prompt is again a non-root prompt, and you mention the file /etc/smb/smb.conf rather than just using smb.conf. Further, why do you touch the file before calling the editor? Editors can create files that don’t already exist.

Thanks for catching the non-root prompt after running su. I have made the adjustment to reflect a root prompt. You’re right, touching the file before calling the editor is a bit redundant but I have it there out of habit.
